Disability Challengers has hundreds of talented and creative staff working across the organisation. So, it was no surprise when three of our play workers came forwards with a different kind of fundraising idea....
The Mongol Rally is a 10,000 mile automobile adventure from Goodwood Motor Circuit to Ulan Baatar, Mongolia. Over 200 teams come out in full force with their cars (which must be under 1,200cc) and make the trek to Mongolia to raise money for charity. The journey, through sometimes arduous climates and terrains, will take about 6 weeks and the teams don’t get any help on the way either! They have to sleep rough (probably in the car!), find their own food and if their car breaks – they have to become expert mechanics too! All whilst working tirelessly towards their fundraising target of £6000!
Before the team leave on the 24th July they are running a series events in the East of Surrey to help raise funds and the profile of Challengers and writing a regular blog to keep everyone up to date with their progress,,,,

Challenging ourselves for Disability Challengers
15/10/09
Hi,
Our names are Amy Sweeting, Sarah Hardy and Caroline Brady. We have all worked for Challengers for over three years and have seen for ourselves the hugely important work that the charity does! However, we want to do more for Challengers and so we are taking part in the Mongol Rally, leaving on July the 24th. We are driving a third of the way around the earth, from Europe to Mongolia via a plethora of countries most people haven't even heard of! All in a car that has an engine with no bigger than 1 litre, with no support crew.....

A few people have kindly pointed out that we have NO mechanical knowledge at all! But you’re all wrong – Sarah recently found out the hard way (having to call out her dad in the middle of the night!) about a switch that you have to press if you go down a large pothole and your car cuts out (this is the technical term). Caroline and Amy are also pros at rolling to the nearest petrol station when we have run out of petrol – although I’m not sure how feasible that will be in the middle of a desert or some of the random countries we are driving through! The lovely men at the local garage have said they will try to show us a few things, we will be pros soon enough!
I think we can drive 10,000 miles no problem – it’s the car we feel sorry for!

We would like to say that we are on target with our preparations, but that would be a lie. We have a to-do list about three pages long, but it seems never ending! At least we have finally sorted the website! The car we were planning to take (Amy’s old car) is too old and so we are on the search again! We aren’t all that bad though, we are in the middle of planning a couple of events – including a Battle of the Bands, a quiz and a Fun day. Watch this space for further information on all our forthcoming events. We are also planning to be at the Oxted carnival and Pram race in July. We know this is a long way away, so we will remind you all of this closer to the time!

We want to say a huge thank you to all the lovely shops in Oxted who donated raffle prizes for our Christmas raffle – we raised almost £900 and a lot of families were interested in Challengers for their children. A great success! If anyone would like to donate prizes for our future raffles then please contact us.
Thank you

Today was a good organising day (YAY!) We have visited many possible venues for our events and have even got personalised t-shirts a hoodies made (You won’t miss us!) If anyone is any good at face painting for our fun day then please let us know. Oh, and we want to sell lots of stuff – so if anyone knows any good car boot sales then let us know and we are all yours!
So we have got a car - bright yellow Suzuki Wagon. We are also in the process of designing a fundraising tea towel - so watch this space to order yours! We have been donated a banner (thank you to Blue Dot Display Ltd) so keep a look out for us around. Everything is slowly happening, have ordered our visas (hard work and a silly amount of money!) We hope to see you at our Funday at the end of May!
