Why we need your help

Play is an essential part of any childhood and all children must play to reach their full potential. It's the irreplaceable framework which we all use to develop the huge range of skills required for adult life. Disability Challengers is an independent childrens charity. We rely on voluntary donations and partnerships with other organisations to deliver projects across Surrey to disabled children. However, play and leisure opportunities for disabled children and young people are few and far between. This means that thousands and thousands of disabled children across the UK miss out on this vital part of their development due to the lack of suitable facilities and support networks.

This also means that families with disabled children are placed under enormous pressure. It is not surprising that some 55% of families with disabled children live in the margins of poverty and that these families are twice as likely to break up (compared to families with non-disabled children).

Disability Challengers is passionate about delivering play opportunities to any disabled child, regardless of the profoundness of their impairment. Through our full-time centres in Guildford and Farnham and our satellite schemes across the county, we deliver some 16,000 child places every year to over 1,100 children. And, of course, by delivering these child spaces, we are also giving a much-needed short-break to their family.

Sadly, this is still not enough as we estimate that for every disabled child that uses our services, three more are desperately waiting to access our play and leisure schemes.

With our annual turn-over now over £1million we rely on the kindness and generosity of individuals, community groups, business and charitable trusts and grant making foundations to enable us to continue running these vital services.
